Bungie Needs To Make Prison Of Elders Into A New Destiny 2 Horde Mode
Come on Bungie, give Guardians what they really want!
Destiny 2 has a lot of content. You can say that there’s not enough for everyone, which is pretty true, but there’s an undeniable glut of stuff to play through for all Guardians if they really want to push for it. However, something that’s been missing from the Destiny universe forever is a horde mode. We got pretty close with Prison of Elders, but now I think Bungie needs to look back and try again with Destiny 2.
The reason I’m writing about this today is because of a post on the Destiny 2 Subreddit. User trueGator89 posted something very interesting. They asked Bungie for a horde mode in Crucible maps. They don’t want a new activity exactly, they just want to shoot endless waves of enemies until they’re finally defeated by an incredibly tough one.
This is something that quite a few Guardians would love to see in Destiny 2, myself included. Games like World War Z and Left 4 Dead do a great job with their horde modes, or just their campaigns. The waves of enemies are relentless, and they push players to breaking point. However, there’s always room to succeed for those who are skilled enough in the game.
Destiny 2 has the perfect setting for a horde mode, and it was even Destiny 2’s answer to the game type, Prison of Elders. Here, Guardians were faced with defeating three arenas worth of enemies until they faced a boss. In the hardest iteration, this game mode was as difficult as a raid, and it’s the most fun I’ve had in the Destiny universe. I’d love for it to come back as it was, but given how Bungie is changing content that they’ve put into the Destiny Vault, I think they should mix up how the game mode worked.
I quite like the idea of using Crucible maps for a horde mode. They’re areas that most Guardians are familiar with already, so they know their way around them pretty well. This means that hordes of enemies can spew into them, and Guardians will know where to run in order to catch a breath before the next enemy slaps them on the back.
You could tie this into some sort of new PvE event for a season to see how it does. Lord Shaxx could work together with Zavala to produce new simulations. These would be practice for Guardians due to the threat of an impending invasion. By testing out how to defend each area against every combination of enemy, Guardians will be ready for whatever is to come out of the Darkness Pyramids.
Of course, Prison of Elders shouldn’t be ignored. I think that the return of this game mode with new, more powerful enemies on rotation would be exquisite. It’s something that an entire generation of Guardians has never experience, and I for one am ready to walk them through it.
Let us know what you think of the idea of a new horde mode in Destiny 2 in the comments.
