Clear Eyes Of Tomorrow Offers A Rare Insight Into Destiny 2's Mechanics

In last week’s This Week At Bungie article, Bungie offered a rare insight behind the curtains of Destiny 2. They explained how the drop rate for clear Eyes Of Tomorrow had been incorrectly implemented. What they outlined also showed how much they care about your experience as a Guardian, and I don’t think enough of a fuss has been made about that effort specifically.

To put this mechanic plainly, there is a drop rate luck factor that is associated with Clear Eyes Of Tomorrow. It was designed to increase over time on your account so that your chance of getting this weapon from the raid will increase over time. In the end, if you still hadn’t got it after a good long while, the drop rate was set to hit 100%.

However, Bungie accidentally applied the factor to a per-character string, meaning that it would effectively take three times as long to earn the weapon. This wasn’t intentional, since Bungie wants to reward Guardians, not punish them, for their effort and replaying their best activities.

What this shows, more than anything, is that Bungie cares about Guardians. They clearly thought a lot about how they wanted this weapon to drop, and how to make it fair to earn. They could have locked it behind a challenge that forces us to work with a specific group and do specific things. Those days are gone now I think. This is a much better way of making Exotics drop, and I hope it rolls out to future expansions.

If you’ve not had this weapon drop yet, don’t worry. From the sounds of it, after the next update, it’ll be much easier to get. Three times as easy to be specific.

Bungie could have kept this a secret and simply said that they increased the drop rate. I think that it shows a lot of integrity that they’re willing to tell us all what they did wrong, what their intentions were, and what they’re doing to fix things. Not many other developers would shine a light on their mistakes like this. Let’s be thankful they’re so truthful.

I'm an avid Destiny 2 fan and player. I fell in love with Destiny 1 during the early alpha and have been hooked by the universe ever since. I really enjoy playing with other Guardians, speculating about the lore, and writing about as much of the Destiny universe as I can.
