Has Destiny 2 Become Unfriendly to New Guardians?

Where do you even start?

Destiny 2 is a great game, there’s no denying that. However, things are starting to reach the point where the game is no longer friendly to newcomers. In fact, with all the vaulting of content and the need to come back each week to catch up on what’s happening in the story, it feels like the game is more unfriendly than ever. This isn’t what Destiny 1 or 2 started out as, and I think it’s starting to ruin the game just a little bit.

Where to Start and How to Follow?

Destiny 2 has a story, but it’s slowly being picked apart according to what Bungie is vaulting next. We’re all pretty salty about the fact that Forsaken will be vaulted next, and to anyone that’s new to the game after that point, the importance of Uldren, now Crow, will be completely lost. To be honest, if you didn’t play or pay attention to last season, then you probably have no idea who he is anyway.

Destiny 2 has shifted from a reliance on having a story that Guardians can follow to pushing everyone to come back and play every week. This is all just to catch up on the story, something that’s seemingly been secondary to Destiny 2 until Bungie worked on getting the seasonal model sorted. Now, if you’re not playing every week, you’re not taking in the story.

Some Guardians, like myself aren’t so bothered about the story. I can take it or leave it, and quite often I will leave it just so that I don’t feel like I need to play the game every single week. However, I appreciate that for many, Destiny 2 is the only game you play. In that case, it’s absolutely fine to come back and play each week, you do what you want.

What I’m getting at here is that Destiny used to be a universe you could pick up and work through at your own pace whilst absorbing all the story. Now, it’s impossible to get all the story unless you look up YouTube videos of it. It’s a little disappointing that this is what the game has become, because it alienates all Guardians before they’ve even picked the title up. What’s the point in playing if you can’t work towards getting everything?

I'm an avid Destiny 2 fan and player. I fell in love with Destiny 1 during the early alpha and have been hooked by the universe ever since. I really enjoy playing with other Guardians, speculating about the lore, and writing about as much of the Destiny universe as I can.
