Destiny 2 Iron Banner Should Allow Guardians to Focus Engrams

Would you prefer a better chance at the reward you’re chasing?

Destiny 2 Iron Banner Should Allow Guardians to Focus Engrams

Iron Banner has been live this week, and it’s a lot more stable than the first run was for Season of the Splicer. Bungie has done exactly what it said it would, and fixed the game mode. Now it’s at least possible to earn the weapons you want from the event, but it’s still quite the slog. You’ve got to play dozens of matches for a chance to convert your Tokens into an Engram that might contain a weapon. There’s so much that could go wrong though. I’ve seen Guardians discussing this subject over on the Destiny 2 Subreddit, and I think they have a valid solution to the issue. Focusing Engrams.

Lord Saladin’s Focus

It’s currently possible to focus certain Engrams into groups. This means that you’re guaranteed to get a certain type of drop, one that’s going to be closer to what you ultimately want. For example, you can gear an Engram to a certain Power Level range, then make it focused on a weapon or peice of armor. You’ll still have randomized loot within those areas, but you’ll also be in with a better chance of getting a roll of the specific item you’re after.

Iron Banner does nothing of the sort. Every reward is based on the same loot pool, and you can’t focus it at all. You’re at the mercy of RNG, and that’s not a good place to be. Now that Bungie has enabled us to focus Engrams elsewhere, it should be doing it everywhere. On the Destiny 2 Subreddit, user Vedallion pointed out how a focusing system could work.

Effectively the Engrams would be split into segments. These are as follows.

  • Current season Iron Banner weapons
  • Iron Banner armor from the current season
  • Past seasons Iron Banner weapons
  • Armor from past Iron Banner seasons

As you can see, there are four distinct groups, and they all make sense. You can either gear your Engrams to the current season of Iron Banner to chase weapons and armor that are new, or you can ensure that none of that new stuff drops. It’s a simple system that would make it easier for collectors and those Guardians who want the latest gear in their arsenal. However, there’s also another tier that could be added. The focusing here would require a certain number of Tokens. The focuses below would require more.

  • A specific weapon type from the current season
  • Armor from the current season with a certain stat increased/masterworked
  • Weapon types from past seasons
  • Armor with single increased/masterworked stats from past season

Once again, you can see where the sections lie here. There’s a definite split, and it would make it easier for Guardians to chase the loot they’re after.

Let us know what you think of this in the comments.

I'm an avid Destiny 2 fan and player. I fell in love with Destiny 1 during the early alpha and have been hooked by the universe ever since. I really enjoy playing with other Guardians, speculating about the lore, and writing about as much of the Destiny universe as I can.
