Why Would Rasputin Choose Darkness?

With that new cutscene hitting Destiny 2 recently, we thought it was worth looking into why Rasputin might choose the darkness. Osiris seemed pretty pissed about something, and that could either be because he saw a future in which Rasputin didn’t exist, or a future in which the Warmind had become an enemy.

Why Would Rasputin Choose Darkness?

Rasputin is a Warmind, and as such it should choose the path that will serve its primary directive, to protect humanity. The thing is, we don’t know that Rasputin is serving humanity anymore, at least since the end of the Warmind DLC.

It seems pretty likely that Osiris saw a future in which Rasputin sided with the coming darkness. This is the enemy that we saw at the end of Shadowkeep, the ones that look just like us. It’s possible then that Rasputin believes that they are the true humanity that it was created to protect. In one way, maybe they are, because all Guardians are full of Light, which Rasputin could see as an impurity.

Rasputin may also just see the coming darkness as a the more powerful side in the coming fight. If that’s true, it would probably choose to side with them so that it would be on the winning side of the war. The Warmind would choose self-preservation if humanity is no longer the object of its protection.

Another possibility is that Rasputin has been overtaken by the darkness. The Warmind is full of secrets, and probably has more than a few superweapons tucked away for good use. The darkness could turn Rasputin on all Guardians, and destroy the tower for good. If that was going to happen, then it would be during a big expansion, or a new season like Season of the Worthy.

Whatever the reasons for Rasputin choosing the darkness, none of them are really that good for Guardians. That was always going to be the case, but what we can also takeaway is that Rasputin could do anything. This Warmind has intentions that we’re completely unaware of, and we need to be ready to fight back no matter what it chooses.
