Hold Position, Kill The Engines And Don’t Let Them Find You

The Exo Stranger is coming back, but what did she mean when she said this?

With the Exo Stranger returning to the Destiny universe in Beyond Light, there’s one extremely interesting piece of lore that could do with some added context. I’m not talking about who she is, or why her Ghost is a floating fish creature. I mean, what was she talking about, and who was she talking to, when she said, “hold position, kill the engines and don’t let them find you”. You can see the whole cinematic for context below, but this line is at 4:12.

A Guardian on Reddit, user IronGemini, actually pointed out that they’d like to know what this is all about, and it got me thinking about it more and more.

The Exo Stranger is meant to have come from somewhere that the Darkness has won. Whether this is a different timeline, some point the future, or just an entirely different part of the universe, we don’t know.

What we do know is that she’s an Exo, a race that Guardians can play as because they are machines from Earth. This would lead me to believe that she is from a future in our current system where the Darkness has arrived and won. Somehow she’s gone back in time to warn us, and help us avoid this future, but we don’t know how just yet.

We can only assume that she’s talking about the Darkness in this clip, but her ship must have been extremely far out if that’s the case. However, it could also just be that she is a holographic projection at this point in the game, and that she’s much farther away than we realise. This would explain why she’s actively trying to avoid the Darkness.

Although, Calus arrived in Destiny 2, so maybe it was him that she was trying to avoid for some reason. Likewise, the Red Legion, and even The Taken King have all come after this scene in Destiny 1, so she might have been avoiding any one of them.

Whatever she was avoiding, it’s safe to say that there’s enough going on in the system right now that she’s probably got enough to deal with. Hopefully there isn’t anything too new that we’re about to be surprised by, but in the end we never really know.

I'm an avid Destiny 2 fan and player. I fell in love with Destiny 1 during the early alpha and have been hooked by the universe ever since. I really enjoy playing with other Guardians, speculating about the lore, and writing about as much of the Destiny universe as I can.
