Is The Darkness Actually Known As The Veil?

With Season of the Worthy coming to a close, we’re looking forward to the next season, and the fall expansion, which may bring about the race called The Veil.

For a few years now, some Guardians have been referring to the race of creatures within the pyramid ships, which are generally known as the Darkness, as The Veil. This name may or may not have any basis to be real, it might just be something a fan said early on and it simply stuck.

But the Darkness is more widely simply the forces that are against the Traveler, and the other similar planet-sized beings that seem to bring enlightenment wherever they go. The Traveler has moved on from many worlds, and it seems like every race it has touched wants it back.

The Veil though, they look to be the antithesis of the Traveler. There are so many pyramid ships out there that it looks like they’ve been around just as long as the big white ball, but what could they be?

Thanks to Gammatrap, we have some new artwork that helps us have a glimpse at what they may look like.

Looks terrifying right? Well there are also some more rumours that might show us what some of the elements of this race will be. As mentioned by Forbes, most races in the Destiny universe have a theme, such as Roman for the Cabal, Greek for the Vex, and Arthurian for the Hive.

With The Veil, it’s suspected that a chess theme will be in place. This would see enemies from Pawns and Bishops, to Knights, Kings and Queens, even Rooks appearing before our eyes.

Would this make sense? Well in a way it does fit with Destiny 2’s lore for this force of Darkness. These enemies are cunning, and they’re all about making the right moves first. They placed a ship within the Moon for example, knowing that we’d find it. They also laid in wait for untold eons, until the Traveler activated and sent a signal that alerted them to its location once more.

Even now, the pyramid ships are being tactical, getting close to us, but not so close that we’ll actively target them over the other impending threats.

I’m really interested to see where Bungie takes the story of Destiny 2 with this final season of year 2. It’s going to be a hectic ride, and it should end with us meeting these new additions to the armies of Darkness.

I'm an avid Destiny 2 fan and player. I fell in love with Destiny 1 during the early alpha and have been hooked by the universe ever since. I really enjoy playing with other Guardians, speculating about the lore, and writing about as much of the Destiny universe as I can.
