Proving Grounds Grandmaster Nightfall in Destiny 2 is Driving Guardians Insane

What are we even trying to prove?

Proving Grounds Grandmaster Nightfall in Destiny 2 is Driving Guardians Insane

This week’s reset in Destiny basically did nothing. The one thing of note that it brought to the game was the Grandmaster Nightfall version of Proving Grounds. This Strike is the daddy of all Strikes at the moment, and it’s pushing some Guardians over the edge. This might actually make the weekly Nightfall the immense challenge it once used to be in Destiny 1. On the other hand, it feels way too difficult.

The two core reasons that this Strike is causing Guardians issues are the room with the tank boss, and the final boss area of the entire Strike. They feel like they could be their own content separate to anything else, yet here they are slapped between two other meaty pieces of content. What is happening?

The tank encounter is like little else in the game. Two waves of incredibly tough enemies come spilling out at you. These guys include yellow health bars and Barrier Champions, and they’re extremely difficult to put down. That’s without mentioning the sniper Psions at the back of the room who decide to take any Guardian who dares to poke their head out down.

The tanks themselves aren’t even that much of an issue. Their shots don’t need to hit you to make you fail. The splash damage is more than enough to do that. It almost feels unfair, but you know with all of these things that there is a degree of fairness built-in. I think we’re just struggling to see it among the slew of enemies and bullets being hurtled our way.

The boss of this Strike is another deal entirely. Endless waves of enemies is one thing, but the boss will just constantly fire waves of damage at you that you can’t really avoid. I’ve heard that there’s a cheese to get around this, but that’s not what we want to be doing. We all want to get through this legitimately.

However, I do love the fact that Bungie has created a genuinely impressive challenge in Season of the Chosen. I really appreciate that the Strike pushes me up to and way beyond my limits. It’s just like the days of Destiny 1 Nightfall runs.

Let us know what you think of the Strike in the comments.

I'm an avid Destiny 2 fan and player. I fell in love with Destiny 1 during the early alpha and have been hooked by the universe ever since. I really enjoy playing with other Guardians, speculating about the lore, and writing about as much of the Destiny universe as I can.
