Vex Mythoclast Isn’t Broken, but Guardians are Calling for a Nerf to it in Destiny 2

Can you fix what isn’t broken?

Vex Mythoclast has become something of a superweapon in Season of the Lost. There are two aspects to this. First, the switch to infinite primary ammo makes it possible to only rely on this weapon and absolutely storm all encounters. You never need anything else. Second, it’s incredibly rare. There might be something going on with the drop rates, but most Guardians are having a lot of trouble picking this weapon up, and that’s making it worse.

The main reason that Guardians are kicking off about Vex Mythoclast is that it’s dominating in the Crucible, and generally any PvP activity. It’s being used a lot in Trials of Osiris, but it’s not the most popular weapon by a long way. Hand Cannons have the close-range situation covered, and bows seem to be the preference for long-range encounters. Vex Mythoclast is the perfect mid-range weapon though, able to take opponents down in the sweet spot on any map.

PvP isn’t generally an activity that’s about getting up close or killing enemies at range. If you’re planning, you’re looking around to capture mid-range encounters wherever you can. That’s why so many Guardians are opting for Vex Mythoclast, because it works so well in Trials.

The problem is, this weapon isn’t broken. Sure, it’s overpowered, but it’s been this way since it launched. It’s seen very little change, but it’s been consistently getting better and better. Eventually, Bungie may have to nerf it, but it feels unfair. This is a weapon that’s so rare that it’s getting into Gjallarhorn of Destiny 1 territory. The thing that I find so shocking is that it’s not the most powerful Exotic out there. Far from it, it’s just incredibly useful in a highly competitive activity.

I don’t own this weapon myself, but if I did, I’d definitely use it to destroy you all in Trials of Osiris. It’s an advantage that only a few Guardians have, so I don’t think it would be fair for Bungie to punish them based on their luck. Instead, there should be a shift to the drop rate, making it easier to get, and evening the odds. If there’s any alteration related to Vex Mythioclast, it should be that.

    I agree the Mythoclast isn’t broken, however the issue here is the inclusion of boss killing weapons in Crucible matches. Much like the Golden Gun, this weapon is designed for Boss Killing, NOT for guardian kills in PVP. What these weapons do is dramatically affect game play and dilute the player base in PVP matches. When I first started in D2, I played two Crucible matches, was so discouraged by the OP weapons I encountered, that I avoided any PVP play for the first 6 months. I am too stubborn to give up so I went back. MANY are NOT.

    Oh sure we can debate that these weapons do not make the user invincible, but if you want a broad player base that enjoys pitting their gun toting skills against other players, then giving a few of the old guard uber weapons is NOT the way to do it.

    Simple adjustments to PVP could open up the game mode. Disallowing boss killing weapons in PVP is one, reducing the range on hand cannons is another (why make rifles if a hand cannon is all that is needed?). The crucible has become more of a private club rather than a viable game mode in its current state. That my friend is unsustainable in the long term.
