What Could Destiny 2 The Final Shape be?

Earlier this week, Bungie revealed that the Dark and Light Saga of Destiny 2, which started all the way back in Destiny 1, will end after Lightfall. The final expansion will be called The Final Shape, and I think it says a lot about where the story is going before we get there. This article is just a tiny exploration of where The Final Shape could go.

I expect Lightfall to be all about the Traveler falling, or being defeated in some way. We saw it in the Red War, it’s entirely possible. In The Witch Queen, Savathun made her own Guardians by harnessing Light. Essentially, Light is a resource, not just a gift from the Traveler. Every race that the Traveler has touched in some way has access to this resource, which is why they get so salty when it moves on.

Whatever happens in Lightfall will happen. After that though, Guardians are going to be left fighting for themselves. The Traveler won’t be around to protect them. That’s why I think The Final Shape will be about building a new Traveler, a machine that still protects humanity and Earth from every threat it faces but isn’t an unknown alien lifeform.

To spark a new era for Destiny 2, The Final Shape has to irrevocably move away from the Traveler. This means that we’ll likely be pulling from both Darkness and Light to make something new. After all, if you combine these two powers, surely the result is something stronger than the components?

The Final Shape gives us a clue in its name. Darkness is symbolized by pyramids, and Light is symbolized by a sphere, the Traveler. Guardians will make their own shape, and that’s the legacy that we’ll move onto the next saga in Destiny 2 with.

I also hope that after this final expansion, we get new enemies, new threats, and something else to battle that isn’t part of the core races we have today. Bungie has proven it’s possible, but we need something else that’s truly unique. Not just a new twist on the existing enemy types.

In my head, the new power that Guardians make will only attract a new threat. Something stronger than we’ve ever faced before. That feels right to me, and I can’t help but think it’s going to be incredible. Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

I'm an avid Destiny 2 fan and player. I fell in love with Destiny 1 during the early alpha and have been hooked by the universe ever since. I really enjoy playing with other Guardians, speculating about the lore, and writing about as much of the Destiny universe as I can.
