This Week In 2015 Sparrow Racing Came To Destiny

This week four years ago, Destiny 1 saw the arrival of one of the best live events in Destiny history, SRL, or to be specific, Sparrow Racing League. Sparrow racing had already become a past time for a number of Guardians, but with The Taken King expansion Bungie went all out and made this hobby into a proper event for a good three week period. What is Sparrow Racing League?

Sparrow Racing League was a racing league, as you’d expect, but Guardians could only race on their Sparrows. You’d load into a race already on your Sparrow, with the competing Guardians also on theirs, and then have to do three laps of some of the best sci-fi racing routes you’ve ever seen in your life.

The maps were pretty limited, I think there were only two or three, but they were a lot of fun, and highly replayable. Sparrows weren’t exactly designed for racing, but somehow the controls and mechanics all worked, probably because Bungie built the maps around Sparrows and their abilities.

Tight turns and jumps all needed to be navigated, as well as a host of enemies, including some with yellow health bars. Sparrows could get a boost if a Guardian did a trick over them, and using the left and right boosters helped you get around tight corners if you scuffed a landing.

There was honestly so much to each race that needed to be taken into account if you wanted to win, but it was the best fun I’ve had in a live event in the Destiny franchise.

Where is Sparrow Racing League?

Sadly Bungie hasn’t brought Sparrow Racing League back in a few years now. I think making the maps was quite difficult, and with the past schedule of launching Destiny 2 and building new DLC, it can’t have been lucrative to spend much time on a live event that wouldn’t have generated as much income.

However, with Destiny 2’s Year 3, we’ve had another fresh start. I think that now that we all accept how Bungie is getting new content into the game, they’ve got the time to spend on weird events like Sparrow Racing. I don’t know if Season of Dawn will see the event return, mainly because The Dawning will take up most of the live event time, but maybe the third or fourth seasons will.

Remember

It’s important to look back and remember what was great in Destiny 2’s history, because Bungie will build on what Guardians found fun. Even Guardians have recreated it. I hope that they look at Sparrow Racing with fondness, and are planning to bring it back at some point before Destiny 3 comes out. Let me know what you think of it in the comments.
