Why It’s A Good Thing Umbral Engrams Are Returning To Destiny 2
Smaller pools for better loot
In their most recent This Week At Bungie article, Bungie revealed some truly awesome news. They confirmed that Umbral Engrams are coming back to Destiny 2. This is something that some Guardians have been requesting for months, and it sounds like Bungie has finally heard them. I thought it would be good to talk about why this is a good change for Destiny 2, and Guardians should be excited about it.
The thing about Umbral Engrams is that they will now drop from any enemies in most activities. There’s nothing in the game that’s going to force you to play a certain Crucible playlist, or mainline Gambit until your head explodes. It’s all about making the loot more accessible to everyone.
Once you get an Umbral Engram, which already has a smaller and more targeted loot pool, you can change it into a Focused Umbral Engram. The loot pool here is even smaller, giving you a much better chance of decoding it into something you want.
I really enjoy the targeted gear and weapon quests in Destiny 2. I unlocked Adored early on in Season of the Hunt, and it’s one of the best sniper rifles I’ve ever used in a game. I even went on to get the Gambit Ornament for it as well. That was not an easy grind.
I think that most Guardians get on with this grind for guaranteed loot as well. You’re willing to put the work in if you know that at the end of it is a weapon that’s worth your time. That’s clearly why Bungie has brought Umbral Engrams back.
There is going to be a new Kiosk for the Prismatic Recaster, and we’ll be getting a story mission to explore how this works. Overall though, I think Bungie is making it easier to grind for the loot you want.
The important thing is that they’re not taking away the effort we have to put in. Like I said, no one minds the grind if the end goal is something they desire. With Umbral Engrams, Destiny 2 will become much more of an enjoyable game. I predict that salty posts about getting rubbish loot will drop by at least 50% over on the Destiny Subreddit as a result.
