Down with the cheatmakers!

Bungie Is Working With Riot Games To Sue Destiny 2 and Valorant Cheatmakers

No one likes a cheat. In particular, game developers really hate cheats. Last year, Bungie issued a cease and desist against one group of cheatmakers, PerfectAim. Everyone thought this was great because all we want is a fair game. Multiplayer games in particular are simply ruined when you have hackers on your servers. Now, Bungie is working with Riot Games, developers of Valorant, to actually sue some cheatmakers.

According to Polygon, the pair have filed their lawsuit with the Central District of California court. It’s against Cameron Santos of GatorCheats, and a few other cheatmakers, for trafficking a portfolio of cheats that are used in their games.

The developers allege that the company and staff sell their cheats through a website and a number of other sources, such as email marketing. It’s been specifically designed so that anti-cheat software, and even real employees at Bungie and Riot Games, can’t detect when a player is cheating.

The lawyers allege that the company has made tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars from these cheats.

I know you Guardians probably don’t need an example, but for those who do, some of these cheats include things like an aimbot. This is a hack that automatically aims for you, meaning all you need to do is hold down the trigger.

On a side note, I want to point out that I think using something like this would make a game less enjoyable. I want to feel like I’ve earned kills with some level of skill. With an aimbot though, there’s no skill involved at all.

Now apparently Bungie has already issued a cease and desist to GatorCheats. At the time, the company told consumers that they’d stop selling their cheats, but support the ones they’d already sold. However, now it looks like they’ve still been selling them anyway.

Bungie and Riot Games say that millions of dollars of damage could have been caused by these cheats. I’m inclined to agree. If you start a game and end up getting killed by people who are obviously cheating, but there’s nothing in place to stop them, you’d just stop playing, wouldn’t you? I know I would. That means less money for the developers, and possibly even a refunded game purchase.

Plus, the real fact of the matter here is that these cheats break terms of service, which is cause enough for this lawsuit.

In a statement to Polygon, Riot Games made it very clear that cheating undermines the whole trust and enjoyment that players want from multiplayer shooters. That’s why they and Bungie are taking this step to shut down those who are threatening their gaming communities.

Let us know what you think about this in the comments.

I'm an avid Destiny 2 fan and player. I fell in love with Destiny 1 during the early alpha and have been hooked by the universe ever since. I really enjoy playing with other Guardians, speculating about the lore, and writing about as much of the Destiny universe as I can.

Thank goodness! At last the terrible experience of Crucible is being recognized. I used to play Crucible all the time and now only when necessary. You can always tell a cheat. The balance of the game indicates…. 20 to 85, really? When one teams pins down another around a flag? That never used to happen in this game but as Destiny cultivated COD players for the almighty dollar this game went down hill. No fun in multiplayer. How do I know? I teach high school, and the boys talk about their cheating all the time… All The Time. Its their culture.
