AFK Forge Farming Is A Dangerous Problem For Destiny 2

With a new season comes a new exploit, except this one could be a danger to Destiny 2 itself.

From the launch of Season of Arrivals there has been a brand new Engram to pick up and earn Power Level from, Umbral Engrams. It turns out that these drop from Forges, and since they’re currently the optimal way to push up your Power Level, everyone is AFK Forge faming in order to collect them.

But this is dangerous for Destiny 2 as a game.

At the time of writing, Bungie has yet to fix the new exploit, but even if they have at this point, there’s nothing to say that future seasons won’t introduce something equally as dangerous. That’s why we want to cover the overarching issue here.

The basic idea with AFK Forge faming is that you lower your Power Level with lower level gear and weapons until you’re below 750. At this point you launch into a Forge, and then just leave Destiny 2 running in the background. Since the game will keep looping you into sessions regardless of whether you’re in a Fireteam of playing solo, you’re likely to keep earning Umbral Engrams, which seem to drop upon Forge failures, for as long as Destiny 2 is running.

Once this is done you can make an Armour-Focused Umbral Engram, which will drop a few points above the max Power Level, and continue farming. This method can also get you some high Power Level weapons as well.

So why is this dangerous for Destiny 2? Because the Destiny Subreddit is filled with Guardians telling others to stay out of Forges if they’re trying to complete them legitimately.

This exploit completely changes the game. No longer is it about playing the content on offer, it’s about scheming to get the highest Power Level so that you can leave the game for the next two months.

Destiny 2 is a game that should be played like any other. If an exploit causes the player base to fundamentally change how they play, meaning it’s impossible to actually play as intended, then what’s the point?

I’m sure Bungie will fix this issue as they move forward, but it’s highlighted the fact that Guardians can’t be trusted with exploits. Everyone seems to want to avoid actually playing the game. I can’t imagine anything more dull that leaving Destiny 2 to run in the background earning items that I can increase my Power Level with. I’d rather not play at all.

Bungie needs to ensure that issues like this never pop up again, because they run a real chance of pushing Guardians away. It has shown that we can’t be trusted.

Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

I'm an avid Destiny 2 fan and player. I fell in love with Destiny 1 during the early alpha and have been hooked by the universe ever since. I really enjoy playing with other Guardians, speculating about the lore, and writing about as much of the Destiny universe as I can.

I don’t necessarily like farming as much as I have to in d2, but it’s what I signed up for, lol. If I were already at Max level due to AFK farming, I feel like the game would be stale/boring. There wouldn’t be a point to playing.

Like getting missing No. On Pokemon red and making infinite rare candies ?

I get it but wow, do you want a ladder to get down off that high horse? Some people like to play the game differently than you and you don’t have to shame them because you would find it boring.
