Do You Want More Invasion Mechanics?

How about a Guardian invading your raid just to ruin your day?

Over on the Destiny 2 Subreddit I recently came across what I thought was an insane Guardian asking for more invasion mechanics in other game modes. However, once I’d given it some thought, it didn’t seem like the craziest thing in the world. My question now is, do you Guardians want more invasion mechanics in Destiny 2?

Gambit introduced invasions to Destiny 2. They’re brilliant because they allow you to mess up the opposing team’s progress by killing them and healing their Primeval. It’s also possible to cause them to drop all of their motes right at the last second, which is always frustrating when it happens to you.

The thing is, Gambit was built with invasions in mind. They’re a part of the game mode, even though it was originally built as a pinnacle PVE experience. Since Bungie added invasions into Gambit, could they add it into some of the other game modes that are in the game?

There are some PVP game modes that it would work with, in a way. Since everyone is already on the same field of combat, there’s not really anywhere to invade. However, you could have a sort of invasion that sees you drop right on top of the enemy team.

I think that invasions would work better with raids though, where Guardians are working towards a common goal. It would need to be a raid built with the invasion mechanic in mind though.

Think about it. If you had to complete a puzzle, but then Guardians started showing up to mess around with you, it would add an entirely new level of threat. You can’t predict how good those Guardians are going to be. They wouldn’t even need to be good, they’d just need to mix things up enough that the Guardians running the raid would have to stop what they were doing.

This would work even better with Beyond Light. The Darkness is here, and there is a force of darker Guardians who want to work against us. By engaging in these raids as an invader, the lore could work in some sort of theory about Guardians slowly succumbing to the Darkness, fighting one another.

Obviously those at Bungie would do a far better job of pulling this together than me, but I do think that this is a really interesting direction that they could take the game in. After all, Dark Souls has an invader mechanic that can occur anywhere, and there’s even a boss in the third game that relies on it.

Let us know what you think about this mechanic in the comments.

I'm an avid Destiny 2 fan and player. I fell in love with Destiny 1 during the early alpha and have been hooked by the universe ever since. I really enjoy playing with other Guardians, speculating about the lore, and writing about as much of the Destiny universe as I can.
