The Dawning Returns For 2018

destiny-2-the-dawning-2018

The Christmas event that has occurred pretty much every year in the Destiny universe since the first game released is back for 2018. Bungie announced yesterday that The Dawning will be starting from the next weekly reset, the 11th of December, and ending on the 1st of January ready for another Forge to open soon after.

What do we get from The Dawning this year then? Well let’s dive in and take a look because, as always, there’s a distinction between the goodies we can earn from grinding, and the cosmetics we can buy from Eververse.

First off we’re seeing the return of an old friend, Eva Levante, who was key in bringing traditions and celebrations to the Tower in the first place. She’s actually a big part of a new sort of activity that involves cooking. Yes, cooking.

The way this works is that we will be given certain recipes and a number of ingredients by old Eva, but we won’t just be handed all the ingredients we need. Instead we’re going to have to head out into the system and murder our way through events, missions, Strikes, and all sorts of other stuff in order to get the ingredients we need.

Items we will be able to bake include Gjallardoodles and Chocolate Ship Cookies (if the puns are making your insides hurt you’re not alone). Apparently we’ll be able to mix and match different ingredients in order to create different types of goodies, which will in turn provide different buffs when finished. I can see some providing penalties as well though so watch out for that.

In addition to being given a cookbook to complete, with secret recipes, we’re going to have bounties for The Dawning as well. The rewards for these include; Enhancement Cores, Mods, Legendary Gear, and a new Legendary Machine Gun that we can earn with random rolls called Avalanche. The best thing you can earn this year however has got to be the sleigh Sparrow that is pretty much the epitome of ridiculous and cool, check it out below.

This Sparrow has some particular perks you might want to be aware of:

Glimmer Boost – This perk causes the Sparrow to spawn a Glimmer present every few seconds while boosting. Those presents burst open and let other Guardians claim some Glimmer for free! This is only active during The Dawning though so make use of it as much as you can.

Glimmer Trick – You spawn 3 to 5 Glimmer presents when you land a trick during The Dawning.

Instant Summon – The Sparrow can be summoned faster than you think. Well okay not that fast but significantly faster.

Every level up during The Dawning, for players at max level, will earn a Dawning Engram as well as a Bright Engram. This is an effort to help you earn all The Dawning rewards you want. Interestingly this year The Dawning Engrams have a list that ticks off cosmetics you earn so you never earn the same thing twice. This should make it easier to earn everything.

There’s only one Exotic emote that you can’t earn, and it makes your Guardian bake some Light Cookies and hold them in the air when they’re done. I know many Guardians will still be annoyed that something is locked off, but the chances are you’ll earn enough Bright Dust from Bright Engram grinding to afford this bundle by the end of the event. If you don’t it doesn’t matter, as I’m sure we’ll get a chance to earn it from some other event in the future.

Finally, there’s no way to buy your way into earning everything from Eva Levante. There’s a mechanic that requires you to play The Dawning activities in order to earn goodies from her, so no whales can throw their money at her to earn anything at all.

I think this year’s Dawning event is going to be pretty great. It doesn’t seem to have too little going on but it also doesn’t feel like it’s going to be too much of a distraction from Black Armoury activities. Let us know what you think in the comments.

I'm an avid Destiny 2 fan and player. I fell in love with Destiny 1 during the early alpha and have been hooked by the universe ever since. I really enjoy playing with other Guardians, speculating about the lore, and writing about as much of the Destiny universe as I can.
