If you’ve been slowly going crazy whilst in lockdown, don’t worry. We have a project here that is perfect for anyone who is looking for something to do with their time over the next week or so. The best thing is that it’s completely Destiny themed, and the second best thing is that you don’t need that much in order to make it work.
Woodworked Ruinous Effigy
This project comes from a Guardian by the name of Joker_Bingo on Reddit. It’s literally a wooden version or Ruinous Effigy, but it has been painted to look just like the weapon’s base form in the game.
What you’re seeing here is just a painted bit of wood. However, Joker_Bingo does say that they 3D printed the ‘pinecone’ at the end, and that they wished they had been able to distress the wood a bit more. I reckon there are enough Guardians out there that someone could distress the wood in such a way that it would look more like the weapon in the game.
So as you can see above, you literally just need a single piece of wood. Okay, fine, there is also a large piece of woodworking equipment involved. However, I’d argue that you could achieve the same result with a jigsaw, a tool that you can hold in your hand, and costs around £20.
In the above image you can see what’s going on. The wood has been marked up based on Ruinous Effigy. This will probably vary from person to person, because everyone’s perception of how they want to make this weapon will be different. I’d also say that the ‘pinecone’ that goes in the end will likely dictate just how large the gap needs to be there.
Here’s the final thing all cut out. Once again, I’d say that with a drill and jigsaw you can achieve the same result. There’s no need for anything fancier.
This is where things start to get a little bit difficult. As you can see, some detail has been cut into the model, and some varnish is being applied to age it. I think that more time spent here would achieve the right level of ageing, but it’s going to vary depending on the type of wood that you have.
This is what I was talking about when it comes to the ‘pinecone’. The rest of the weapon looks great, but making that ‘pinecone’ is going to be extremely tricky. I’m not surprised that Joker_Bingo decided to 3D print one since they had access to one. I’d still love to see someone try to build one from scratch.
I am so pleased with the way this looks, even if it doesn’t quite match the way the weapon appears in the game. We see so many different 3D printed versions of Destiny weapons, but I think we need to get more like this that are made from wood.

I was wondering if I could buy that ruinous effigy?
